More Info
Zach Budish has a long line of role-models to choose from when preparing to go into his hockey games. He has three older brothers who all played high school hockey for the Edina Hornets: Andy (1997 State Champions team), Josh (football and hockey player), and Jeff (football and hockey player; St. Olaf College hockey team until 2008).
Zach Budish was born on May 9, 1991 and grew up in Edina, Minnesota. In high school, he played football and hockey. During his junior year, Zach Budish tallied 63 points over the course of 30 games. He was also named the Edina hockey team's Most Valuable Player and was a member of the All-Metro First Team.
Unfortunately, Zach Budish did not have the same success during his senior year. He several tore his ACL during an Edina football game and he was sidelined for the rest of the season...and the entire hockey season, too. This was a major set-back and many wondered if he would be drafted for hockey after all. However, pro teams still expressed interest and Zach Budish had already committed to the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers hockey team for the 2009-2010 season.
With his college career secured, Zach Budish then went through NHL drafting talks. In May 2009, he participated in Toronto's NHL Scouting Combine. And, surprisingly for some, Zach Budish was picked in the second round of the draft by the Nashville Predators.
With a healed ACL, Zach Budish played in all 39 games as a Gopher freshman. Twice in the 2009-10 season, Budish was named the WCHA Rookie of the Week. Playing much of the second half of the season as right wing on the team's top forward line, Budish won 57.2 percent of his faceoffs.
For Budish's sophomore season, he was limited to only seven games because of an injury. He had six points and the team was 5-2-0 in games he played and 3-0-0 in games he recorded a point. Budish was named to the WCHA All-Acadmic team in the 2010-2011 season.
