Travis Boyd is from Hopkins, Minnesota. In high school, Travis played for Hopkins High School under head coach Chad Nyberg. He also skated for two years for the U.S. National Development Program in Ann Arbor, Michigan under Ron Rolston.

Boyd joined the Minnesota Gophers for his freshman season in 2011. He has contributed to the Gophers since.
