Nico Sacchetti was raised in the region famous for its hockey: the Iron Range in northern Minnesota.
As a Virginia, Minnesota native, Nico Sacchetti was a stand-out from his 8th grade year and found a place among the ranks of high school players due to his size and speed. As a high school freshman, Nico Sacchetti assisted the Virginia Blue Devils in a state tournament berth. During his sophomore year, Nico Sacchetti recorded 23 goals and 21 assists in 24 games and as a junior, Nico Sacchetti had 38 goals and 52 assists.
During Nico Sacchetti's senior year in 2007-2008, he attended Omaha in the USHL and played with future Minnesota Gophers teammate Mike Hoeffel.
Nico Sacchetti was drafted with the Dallas Stars as the 50th overall pick for the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. Also, Nico Sacchetti played for the 2006 Junior World Cup US team where he scored 1 goal and had an assist.
Nico Sacchetti's freshman year with the Golden Gophers was a strong one; he appeared in 36 of the team's 37 games, which include the last 32 games of the season. In his 2009-10 season, Sacchetti continued to be a core played as he competed in 38 of the team's 39 games. Nico Sacchetti's talent allowed him to score 15 goals over 13 different games. On the ice he splits his time between center and wing while, off the ice he focuses his time on being selected to the WCHA All-Academic team.
Sacchetti's sophomore season, 2009-10 was a success as he participated in 38 of the team's 39 games. He spread his 15 points over 13 different games.
For the 2010-11 season, Sacchetti recorded seven points in 30 games.
