Nate Schmidt is from St. Cloud, Minnesota where he went to Saint Cloud Cathedral high school. In high school, Schmidt played one season with the Fargo Force of the USHL, where he was ranked seventh on the team and first among Force defensemen in points with 37. Schmidt played three years of high school at St. Cloud Cathedral under head coach Eric Johnson. He helped the team to Class A state semi-finals.

Schmidt came to the Minnesota Gophers hockey team for his freshman season in 2010-11. He skated in 13 games and had one assist.
