Justin Holl is from Tonka Bay, Minnesota. Holl played high school hockey at Minnetonka and was the team's captain in the 2009-10 season under head coach Brian Urick. He accomplished 37 points in 2009-10 and earned all-Classic Lake Conference, all-Metro, and all-State honors.

In Holl's freshman season, he skated in 25 games and had seven points. The Minnesota Gophers were 4-1-1 when he recorded a point.
