State Theatre

The State Theatre is a treasured downtown Minneapolis theater house on Hennepin Avenue. The State Theatre opened on February 5, 1921 and was hailed as one of the finest theaters in the country. Chicago architect J.E.O Pridemore designed the State Theatre for approximately one million dollars.  State Theatre Tickets are a hot sell!

Some interesting features of the State Theatre include a main floor of glass, which provided for lighting from below, rarely found in theaters. The Historic State Theatre also used one of the earliest forms of air conditioning, using pipes and vents that delivered water-cooled air from underground, keeping the temperature in the theater around 72 degrees.

Early on, the State Theatre showed silent films with a Wurlitzer pipe organ. From 1925 to 1958, the State Theatre was mainly a place to see movies. In 1989, Minneapolis bought the State Theatre along with the entire LaSalle block. The State Theatre was restored and opened in November of 1991 with the Minnesota Opera's production of Carousel. The State Theatre Minneapolis was restored for about $8.8 million.

The State Theatre seating provides for 1,286 on the main floor along with 662 balcony seats. There is also seating in a pit section with 30 chairs. Overall, the seating at the State Theatre is a total of 2,163.  State Theatre tickets sell quickly!

Today, the State Theatre hosts live Broadway touring productions and musical concerts. The schedule for upcoming events includes great shows like Avenue Q, Sweeney Todd and High School Musical.
