The Minnesota Wild was the announced team name in 1998. Other possible team names suggested were the Minnesota Blue Ox, Minnesota Freeze, Minnesota Northern Lights, Minnesota Voyageurs and Minnesota White Bears. The name "Minnesota Wild" was unveiled at Aldrich Arena in St. Paul, Minnesota.  Minnesota Wild tickets became a hot sell right away.

The Minnesota Wild's first ever NHL draft choice was Marian Gaborik, who was the Wild's superstar and best player. However Gaborik left the Wild Roster have some debate and and made room for other talent on the Minnesota Wild Roster. In only its third season since inception, the Minnesota Wild made the NHL playoffs and performed remarkably well. It defeated the Vancouver Canucks and the Colorado Avalanche en route to a date with the Anaheim Ducks in the Western Conference Finals. The Wild succumbed to the Ducks four games to zero, however the playoff run will always be remembered my Minnesota Wild fans.
